Precision & processing

Every audio sample drives the modal equations. FFT, DCT, NUDFT, constant-Q and RFT inspect the same captured PCM.

03 / The virtual instrument

210.24 mm steel plate · 1 mm thick · free edges

Computed plate dynamics; approximate sand transport. The input-to-force scale is a declared virtual actuator, not calibration to a physical speaker or plate.

Test a measured frequency

Hz · sine wave at −17 dBFS RMS. Frequencies are passed into the solver without snapping to a pattern.

Model & limits

Waveform → damped modal equations → full acceleration covariance → spatial vibration field → grains. Square modes use a converged Ritz solution; circular modes satisfy free-edge plate boundary conditions.

Young’s modulus 200 GPa; density 7,850 kg/m³; Poisson ratio 0.3; damping ratio 0.015. Fixed off-centre actuator: 1 N at full digital scale. Modes retained to 7.5 kHz; rigid translation and tilt excluded.

Each display factor combines all retained modes. Up to 24 factors are used, with residual energy and approximation reported. Sand uses a bounded migration and contact model; it is not a resolved grain collision simulation.
